Where Histology Meets Diagnostic Intelligence

Soft tissue & Bone Pathology
This section consists of connective tissue, skeletal muscle, and adipose tissue, covering a range of conditions from benign tumors (lipoma) to malignant sarcomas (liposarcoma) and bone tumors such as osteosarcoma and chondrosarcoma

Neuropathology
Neuropathology covers the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and meninges, encompassing conditions such as gliomas, meningiomas, neurodegenerative changes, demyelination (e.g., multiple sclerosis), and inflammatory lesions (e.g., encephalitis)

Hepatobiliary & Pancreatic Pathology
This section encompasses benign and malignant tumors of the Liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, and pancreas. Includes hepatitis, cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma, cholecystitis, and pancreatic adenocarcinoma.

The collection consists of diseases of blood, bone marrow, lymph nodes, spleen and (thymus) Includes leukemias (AML, ALL), lymphomas (Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin), and reactive lymphoid hyperplasia.

This category covers the diseases of oral cavity, salivary glands, nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, thyroid, and larynx.
Includes squamous cell carcinoma, pleomorphic adenoma, thyroid nodules, and nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Dermatopathology covers the skin and its appendages, encompassing inflammatory dermatoses (e.g., psoriasis, eczema), infectious lesions, and neoplasms ranging from benign (e.g., seborrheic keratosis) to malignant (e.g., melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma).

This section covers the neoplasms of esophagus, stomach, small and large intestine, appendix, includes gastritis, inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis), polyps, and carcinoma.

Female Genital System Pathology
We discuss the benign and malignant conditions of vulva, cervix, endometrium, ovary and fallopian tubes. It includes cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), endometrial hyperplasia, and carcinomas.

Urogenital & Male Reproductive Pathology
This module covers diseases of the kidney, ureter, bladder, prostate, testes, and epididymis. It includes conditions such renal cell carcinoma, transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder, prostate adenocarcinoma, and HPV-related squamous cell carcinoma of the penis.

Breast Pathology covers the ductal and lobular architecture of the breast, encompassing fibrocystic changes, benign tumors (e.g., fibroadenoma), proliferative lesions, and malignant neoplasms (e.g., invasive ductal carcinoma, ductal carcinoma in situ).

This module covers the neoplasms of the Lung, thymus, airways, and pleura including; pneumonia, interstitial lung disease, thymomas, lung adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma.

Cytopathology
Cytopathology covers the microscopic examination of individual cells and cell clusters, encompassing fine needle aspiration (FNA), exfoliative cytology (e.g., Pap smear), and fluid cytology, used in the diagnosis of inflammatory, reactive, and malignant conditions
Who we are and What We are up to
Pathorwanda is an online platform that brings together high-resolution histological images of both common and rare Rwandan pathologies cases that are otherwise difficult to access, and pairs them with a built-in chatroom where local and international pathologists (including experts from the University Medical Center Göttingen, Germany) can discuss cases, share second opinions, and collaborate in real time. It is freely accessible to pathologists, residents, lab technicians, and medical students alike, making world-class pathology education and specialist consultation available in Rwanda without geographic or financial barriers.

By implementing a digital pathology platform, trainees and pathologists can review histological slides from both rare and common cases, thereby reducing diagnostic errors and significantly shortening the time required to reach a final diagnosis

The platform provides a rich digital repository of real local cases, including both common and rare pathologies, giving medical students, residents, and laboratory personnel hands-on learning materials that were previously unavailable or hard to access.

Through a built-in chatroom and shared image repository, local Rwandan pathologists and international experts from Germany can engage in live case discussions, exchange knowledge, and provide second opinions, bridging the gap between high- and low-resource settings.
Meet Our Team

Prof. Dr. med. Philipp Ströbel
He is a Professor of Pathology and Director of the Institute of Pathology at the University Medical Center Göttingen (UMG), Germany. He leads the Mediastinal and Soft Tissue Tumor groups at UMG. His distinguished academic and professional achievements extend well beyond the brief overview provided here.

Assoc. Prof. Felix Manirakiza
He serves as an Associate Professor of Molecular and Anatomical Pathology at the University of Rwanda and as a Senior Consultant Pathologist at the University Teaching Hospital of Kigali (CHUK). His career encompasses far more than can be summarized in this brief overview.

Dr. Djibril Mbarushimana, MD, MMed
He is a Senior Consultant Anatomical Pathologist and serves as Head of the Department of Pathology at the University Teaching Hospital of Butare (CHUB). He has a strong interest in computing, with a proven track record in developing advanced technological platforms. His combined expertise in pathology and information technology enhances the impact and effectiveness of this platform.

Dr. Evode Mbabazi, MD
He is a pathologist in training with a keen interest in computational pathology and the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in diagnostic medicine. Driven by ambition and determination, he initiated this project to enhance diagnostic accuracy, promote pathology education, and strengthen collaboration among pathologists locally and internationally.
